And I mean real fuel economy. Not “my computer said 50mpg while I was going downhill in neutral with a tail wind one day”, I mean “I record my distance between fill-ups and divide by gallons to get actual average MPG”. Personally I have a ridiculous Excel spreadsheet with lots of pretty colors.

Kinja'd!!!

1998 Honda Civic: 34.01mpg best, 25.82mpg worst. Costs roughly 7 cents per mile.

In my Slobalt, with 80% highway and 20% city driving, I get 28mpg.

With 100% city driving, 22-24 mpg.

In my Outback, my average per tank is around 28. Trying to push that a bit higher because my gas budget is tight and I do a ton of driving all around St. Louis.

When I daily drove my Datsun I pushed around 25ish mpg’s. Didn’t matter if I drove it like a goon or tried to hyper mile it, it was close or above 25 mpg’s. Not too bad for a 43 year old car.

Yeah, the funny thing about my Excel spreadsheet there is how my average never changes, even though I went from a crap engine to a much better engine, and recently from 100% city driving to 50/50 city/highway driving. The only thing that can even affect my fuel economy is a long drive at 80mph against the wind, which is what that 25mpg tank was. 80mph, headwind, A/C on. Wringing out about 3.2k RPM the whooole way to Kansas City.

Shifting early makes a huge difference. In my last tank I was shifting at or well above 3k rpm and a half tank would last me a week. In my current tank, I’ve been shifting religiously at 2.5k rpm and I only did a quarter tank this week. I’ve also been driving on the highway at a consistent 65mph and trying to keep momentum going up/down hills.

Trying to squeeze every last mile per gallon outta cars is fun every once in a while as lame as it sounds haha

Mk4 Jetta 1.8T manual: 23-26 mpg in mixed spirited driving.

Usually more toward 23-24, a little higher if I’m hypermiling, yo, or doing a lot of highway. Doesn’t seem to make as much difference as I would expect, possibly due to high revs at 70+ mph.

Crown vic - 21 highway on average, 16 city in the summer, 14 in the winter.

Chevelle - 12 highway, 5-8 city. I blame the crap 2bbl carb they thought was a good idea in 1971 and the fact that my vacuum advance didn’t work, which I discovered after putting the car into storage a few years ago.

I use Fuelly. It’s pretty neat. My car is weird in that an all city tank can be as low as 20 or 21 but an all highway tank can be as high as 31 or 32. I’ve even seen 35 before, but I kept my speed down on that trip. Never more than 65 or so miles-per-hour. Normally on trips, I set the cruise at 77 or so and average 30 or 31.

It was EPA rated when new at 22 city and 29 highway.

I keep track of everything on Fuelly - very cool site. You enter your purchase price, amount purchased, kms since last fill-up, etc., and it does the calculations for you and displays them in a very neat and tidy way. :)

My stats for my ‘09 DD Hyundai Accent hatch, which I drive fairly conservatively most of the time:
http://www.fuelly.com/car/hyundai/ac…

I’m Canadian, so my stats are in Liters per 100Km used, but I have MPG listed as one of my Mini Stats and converting isn’t too hard. My best MPG(US) on a tank ever was 39.2 MPG(US), worst was 29.9 MPG(US). My average is around 34.6 MPG(US).

I don’t “hypermile”, but I occasionally use little tricks to eke out a few more kms per tank...for example, my house is on a hill. I can actually roll from where I park all the way down my driveway and out our very sleepy subdivision road all the way to the stop sign at the main road without starting my car...around 250-300m or so, so I usually just coast out to there when leaving the house. :) I also keep the revs fairly low most of the time unless I really need the power (or are having a little fun ;) ) and usually shift around 2.5/3K rpm. I’ll also coast down hills with my foot off the gas while in gear sometimes as well, as long as the hill is steep enough that I won’t lose speed on the way down.

Not lame at all, I try it, myself, on occasion! I’ve managed to get 39.2 MPG(US) out of my ‘09 Accent on my best tank so far, but that was also during a very hot spell, so that probably helped...

I tend to cycle back and forth: most of the time driving for the moderate section of the powerband, shifting at 3000-4500; but sometimes, I change it up and try a short-shifting tank to conserve, and see how much of a difference it makes.

Typically my ‘06 Sierra, doing mostly short trip city driving, gets 13-15 mpg. If I do an all highway tank I’ll usually get in the 17-18 range. Although towing my camper it drops to the 10-11 mpg. I don’t actually log it or anything, but I always look to see how I did.

I actually use the Road Trip app for tracking fuel. It’s great because it has charts out the wazoo, I can create indivdual trips and track the gas and economy during that specific trip, and it also forecasts mileage and money spent on gas over the course of a month or year. It can also estimate how many miles you can really get out of the tank based on average fuel economy and tank size and can track the mileage of your tires and other vehicle expenses. I use fuelly as well, but it’s Road Trip that I put the info into at the station.

I do keep track of my fuel economy. My Peugeot 406 coupe has a LPG fuel conversion, which makes it a little harder to compare as LPG has less energy per liter, so it needs more liters. The car needs on average about 10L/100 km LPG (24 mpg US old school). With Dutch and German fuel prices I tend to spend about €0.055 a km ($0.10 a mile) on fuel. Do note that had I not had that LPG conversion I’d pay $6 a gallon (US) for gasoline.

So far the Mazda’s been averaging 24-25 mpg. Considering that’s 99.5% city and I’m driving for good delivery times over gas mileage, I’m happy with that.

My ‘98 Ibiza 1.4 16v gets between 7,5L-8,0L/100km (roughly 31-29mpg). Not great for a small N/A 4-cylinder but those aren’t particularly known as economical engines.

My ‘94 850 Turbowagon gets around 16L/100kms (14ish mpg) on LPG, which (due to LPG having lower energy density than petrol) should equate to roughly the 13.5L/100kms (17ish mpg) the trip computer shows on petrol. I don’t drive it nearly enough on petrol to be able to actually calculate an average.

It is running filthy rich due to an exhaust leak before the lambda though, so I should be able to improve that dramatically once I address the issue.

My ‘97 S40 2.0 16v gets around 12L/100kms or 19mpg also on LPG but I haven’t given it a proper tune up since buying it a couple months ago so there’s still room for improvement.

All mixed city/B-road/highway driving.
